How Do You Cope?
This is the first post from my blog, that will appear in your email. I have thought about whether or not to send a message such as this one, but decided that I wanted to do two things: one, share my sense of despair over the current political situation, and two, sincerely ask how you cope.
Each day I wake up wondering what horror has Trump and his minions created today, how much worse will today be than yesterday?
As a boomer I watched as Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty, Fair Housing Act, Medicare/Medicaid, Civil Rights Voting Act, all moved our country in a positive direction, addressing iniquities in the economy, housing, medical care, and race. Like a naieve little duckling I "imprinted" on this era, believing that life for all of us would continue to get better and better.
Then something that I hadn't foreseen happened. The unraveling began. It started with the Nixon era then, Reagan, yes even Clinton, and now Trump, as the Neoliberal Order displaced the Modern Progressive Era. At every step, I fumed, and thought, "How much worse can it get?" Today I know the answer and can't bring myself to venture to ask that question again.
I know most of you feel the same.
And so I ask you: How do you manage to get by day to day? What are your strategies for dealing with this moment in time? What gives you hope?
Thanks in advance, as the saying goes...
